The Canes Baseball Organization is a minor league baseball club that has been around since the early 2000s. Founded by former Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher and manager Dave Dombrowski, the Canes play in the South Atlantic League (SAL) and have become one of the most successful teams in the league. The Canes are owned by a private group of investors, led by Dombrowski.
History of the Canes
The Canes were founded in 2003, when Dombrowski purchased the Charleston RiverDogs from the New York Yankees. He relocated the team to Greensboro, North Carolina and rebranded it as the Canes. In 2004, the Canes won their first SAL championship in their inaugural season. Since then, the Canes have won three additional championships (2009, 2011, and 2013).
The Canes have been a model of consistency in the SAL, consistently making the playoffs and fielding competitive teams. The Canes have had several notable alumni, including current MLB stars Justin Verlander, Buster Posey, and Ryan Braun.
Ownership of the Canes
The Canes are owned by a private group of investors, led by Dombrowski. The other investors in the organization include former MLB players Mike Piazza and Jim Thome, as well as businessman Henry Samueli. The group purchased the team from the Yankees in 2003 for an undisclosed amount.
The ownership group has been very successful in their stewardship of the Canes, as the team has been consistently competitive and profitable. The group has also made significant investments in the team’s infrastructure, such as renovating the team’s ballpark and adding luxury suites.
The Future of the Canes
The Canes are in a very strong position heading into the 2021 season. The team has an impressive roster of young talent, with several players on the cusp of making the jump to the major leagues. The ownership group is also committed to continuing to invest in the team.
The Canes have become one of the most successful teams in the SAL, and the future looks bright for the organization. With a strong ownership group and a talented roster, the Canes are poised to continue their success for many years to come.
